Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about accent modification, our programs, and how we work.
What is accent modification?
Accent modification is a voluntary, evidence-based process in which a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist works with you to adjust specific features of your speech — pronunciation, rhythm, stress, and intonation — to improve communication clarity. It is not a treatment for a speech or language disorder. It is an elective service available to anyone who wants to enhance how they communicate.
Will I lose my accent entirely?
No — and that is not the goal. Accent modification is about giving you more control over how your speech is received, not about erasing your identity. You choose what to work on and how far to take it. Many clients want to be more clearly understood in specific professional contexts while keeping every other aspect of their accent intact.
How long does it take?
The timeline varies depending on your starting point, your goals, and how much practice you put in between sessions. Some clients notice changes within a few sessions; more comprehensive work typically takes several weeks or months. Your free consultation will give you a realistic picture of the scope of work involved. Results vary based on individual effort and consistency.
Do I need to have a communication disorder?
No. Accent modification is designed for people who want to enhance their communication — not for people with a diagnosed speech or language disorder. It is an elective service and does not require a medical referral.
How are sessions delivered?
All sessions are delivered via secure video call — all you need is a computer, a stable internet connection, and a quiet space. Virtual sessions are held to the same clinical standards as in-person care. If you prefer in-person accent modification, we recommend contacting a licensed SLP in your area.
Are your SLPs licensed?
Yes. All SLPs in our network are registered with their provincial or state regulatory college and hold graduate-level credentials in Speech-Language Pathology. Foxtrot Speech and Language is operated by a Speech-Language Pathologist registered with the College of Health and Care Professionals of British Columbia (CHCPBC).
What's the difference between your programs?
The Clarity Starter (6 sessions) is designed for targeted work on specific sounds or patterns. The Clarity Program (12 sessions) is a comprehensive approach addressing pronunciation, rhythm, and prosody across a wider range of contexts — it's the program most clients choose. The Clarity Intensive (20 sessions) is for clients with demanding timelines, such as aviation professionals preparing for ICAO assessments or executives with upcoming high-stakes commitments. Individual sessions are also available at $150 USD per session for clients who prefer to pay as they go or who want to continue after completing a program.
What happens in the free discovery call?
A 15-minute call with a licensed SLP. It's an opportunity to get to know each other, ask questions, discuss your goals, and talk about whether our services are a good fit. There is no cost and no obligation. If you decide to move forward, your program begins with a comprehensive accent assessment, a written report, and a personalized program outline.
What is ICAO Level 4 and how can you help?
ICAO Level 4 (Operational) is the minimum English proficiency standard required for pilots and air traffic controllers operating internationally. It is assessed across six components, including pronunciation and fluency — the two areas that accent modification directly addresses. Our SLPs work with aviation professionals to target specific phonemes, stress patterns, and rhythm that are relevant to the assessment. Accent modification does not replace aviation English training but can be an effective complement to it.
Can I pause or stop my program?
Yes. Sessions are scheduled flexibly, and if you need to pause for travel, work, or personal reasons, we accommodate that. If you want to stop before completing your program, speak with your SLP — they can advise on what remaining sessions would cover and help you make an informed decision.
What if I'm not satisfied with my progress?
If you have concerns about your progress at any point, raise them with your SLP. They can adjust the focus of your program, modify the approach, or discuss whether additional sessions would be beneficial. Progress in accent modification depends on consistent practice between sessions — your SLP will be honest with you about what's needed. We are committed to providing high-quality clinical service throughout your program.
Is accent modification covered by insurance?
Accent modification is typically not covered by health insurance, as it is an elective service rather than treatment for a diagnosed condition. Some employers — particularly in aviation and corporate settings — may cover accent modification as professional development. We recommend checking with your employer or insurance provider.
